Random Ramblings

The super sweet Amanda did a random thoughts post earlier in the week, and I really liked it. Since it seems I have a whole lot of nothing to say, I thought I would try it.

Here goes....

Kyle had an eye appointment to follow-up on his ROP, which had mostly cleared by his last appointment in September. Other than some slight scarring from his surgery, the doc said Kyle's eyes look great. He would like to see us again in a year, but only as a precautionary measure. While we were in the waiting room, Kyle was quite the social butterfly. If he did not have someones attention, he would literally grunt (sounds kind of barbaric, huh!) at them until he had their full attention. Once he had it, he would laugh and reward them with a HUGE smile. He was a little cutie.

Kyle LOVES to be outside. If Madison goes outside to play, and Kyle is not "invited", he'll sit by the door and cry until we take him outside. While he loves to be outside, he will not touch grass. He seems to have some strange fear of grass for some reason. This little quirk has actually served us well...during Madison's games he won't crawl off our blanket!

Boys are mischievous and apparently it starts early! Kyle is into everything. When Madison was a baby, she was content to sit and play with her toys. Kyle on the other hand, loves to go exploring. He is always going through the cupboards and has even crawled INTO the cupboards on occasion. If he can crawl somewhere, he goes. If there is something to explore, he will. We have even found him in the bathroom licking the toilet. Yuck, I know.

Yesterday Kyle learned to climb the stairs. I'm sure we're in for even more trouble soon!

Things on the eating front are going so-so, and Kyle's weight is sitting steady at 17 pounds. Some days he eats like a champ, others it is a struggle to get him to eat anything. Our challenge right now is that Kyle is beginning to prefer table food. That is actually a good thing, but the downside is that it takes him forever to "gum" his food. Where before he would consume a container of yogurt (120+ calories) in a few minutes, now it takes him the same amount of time just to eat one french fry. Seems silly, but we celebrate each calorie or bite of food that goes in Kyle's mouth.

Next week Kyle has his quarterly evaluation with a physical therapist. His last one did not go to well, so we are praying for a favorable report this time. I am (cautiously) optimistic though, as Kyle has made great strides in his gross motor skills over the last couple months. Hard to imagine that just three months ago he wasn't even rolling over yet. Now, he is crawling, pulling up on everything, and even climbing the stairs.

Kyle and I will be taking a trip together in the near future. More on that later. But, my question to you all...How in the world do I get through the airport with Kyle by myself? It's not the flying part that has me nervous. But after our plane lands and we get our luggage...I will have two suitcases, Kyle's pac-n-play, a carseat, my laptop, and the diaper bag. And of course Kyle in his stroller. I have no idea how I am going to manage! I figured that I could get one of those "Smart Carts" but I can't remember if those have a place for Kyle to sit. If that's the case, I'll be fine. I can just fold Kyle's stroller up and add it to our pile of stuff on the cart. If there isn't a place for Kyle to sit on the Smart Cart, I'm not sure what I can do. Any suggestions???

I'll leave you with some random cuteness...

Oh Kyle is getting so big. I think I can tell a difference in just the couple of months that I have been reading along.

And Cade totally had the fear of grass. We thought it was so funny and odd. But he eventually got over it. Soon enough, he will be crawling away to get to the grass.

I would think that airport security people (the ones who drive the carts for the people who can't walk far) would be able to help. With Kyle's sweet and charming smile, I am sure you will find some quick help. Don't be afraid to ask someone "official." Stranger, not so much:) It was good to hear from you and see what has been going on!

He has definitely come a long way in the past few months. Wow!
As for the airport thing, I'm not sure. I just flew with my daughter recently but had my husband with me to help. It was tough but keeping her in the stroller really helped out if you can stack everything else on your luggage (assuming it rolls). Good Luck with all that! I've gotten really good at figuring at situations as they arise, even if they seemed impossible before. Crazy!

I don't think you rambled at all.
I learned so much about Kyle in this post. My favorite random was the "cuteness"!

Hey there stranger, Are you headed our way again? Maybe this time we can hook up.. send me a note and let me know.

I had to travel one time before with Owen and I found this cool car seat bag/backpack, that I was able to stuff very full with not only the car seat, but toys and blankets etc. Also, depending on where you are going, see if a friend has a pack and play that you could borrow, so you don't have to lug yours.

If you are headed my way, I have all that stuff still not sure how I could get it to you, but we can try to make some arrangements.

Kyle is getting so big and is just so darn adorable. I think that he is just perfect! Please tell Joe and Madison hello. Talk to you soon!! Cristi

Ooh I did the "Baby and Me" flying alone thing back in March - WHEW! I used the umbrella stroller and pushed it with one hand while I drug the rest behind on wheels. It worked out find until they demanded I remove my shoes, take Lincoln out of the stoller, put it on the conveyer belt, along with everything else I was carrying on, and walk through the beeping archway. It took forever and people behind me were upset and no one would help me get things off the belt...And I had to put Lincoln the nasty ground...

But don't worry. It'll be fine :)

I too love his cuteness!! I really think you could get someone from the airport to help you...you might want to call ahead and set something up. I did that with my girls when they flew alone, I imagine there's something for parents with children as well! Thanks for the update.

I was so happy to see a new post and one all about Kyle. I will also pray that his evaluation with a physical therapist goes well. He sounds like such an explorer and I am sure that all that exploring can only mean that the physical therapist will be blown away by his achievements.

Love
Elise

Hey Kupiec Family,
Kyle continues to amaze me. Is Madison enjoying cheering? I just had a good laugh looking at the pictures from the eighties again.

My good friends son is also afraid of grass. Such a funny thing. It keeps them on the blanket which is definately a bonus. My other friends little girl is afraid of sand. Sophia (my girl) afraid of avacodos..no joke!

What great shots. Glad to hear that Kyle is coming along so well!

I travelled through the airport with two kids on my own and it was difficult. David helped me with the check-in on this end and my brother helped me once I hit Toronto.

If you can't have help right at the gate, what I recommend doing is getting one of those "mobile"carts that drives you around. Also, lots of airport have guest/greeting services. Call ahead and see if the airports you will be using have this and will be able to lend you a hand when on your own.

Pack lite. I travel to and from Chicago every other month with 3 kids. Usually, I pack enough diapers for 24 hours... the rest I buy there.

Boys are so different than girls. Eh? Have fun... he is a cutie!

Hi I found this site via Nate and Trish . I was drawn to read it because of the kids names. You see i have my very own Kyle and Madison although he is 19 and she is 11. They bless me with overwhelming happiness everyday. You are so lucky to have two special angels. I will keep reading. Christie in Las Vegas

carry him in a front pack or a hip sling.
Eli used to freak out with the grass thing, too. It WAS nice until he learned to enjoy playing on it.
on the ROP, how far did Kyle's go? Did he ever need a scleral buckle at all, or only laser?
Cute, cute pics!

So cute. I know a lot of babies that hate the feel of grass. Must be the texture. I love the feel of grass until bugs start to climb into my shorts.....then I go inside my air conditioned house!

I've been blessed by reading your story for awhile now but with your airport question, I had to respond. :) My sister (21) travels with her 2-year old daughter who has CP and there are some times when she has to fly alone with her.

1) Don't be afraid to hire help! The $10 it takes to get someone to carry your stuff to your car is WELL WORTH it!

2) Don't stress about being quick for the people in line behind you. They have to understand that you're "traveling for two" and expediency is not in the books. :)

If you're traveling Southwest, they're no longer doing the family pre-boarding. They are now boarding families between Group A and Group B. It helps to go to the counter and ask for a "blue slip" so you can get on the plane before everyone else. Whichever airline you're flying, I would suggest that because it really helps being one of the first ones on the plane - that way you can get settled in and take two seats if necessary.

Anyway, that's my two cents. :)
